Short Term Accommodation (STA) Assessment

NDIS Short Term Accommodation (STA) Assessment Reports

STA assessment reports that justify respite, transition stays and trial stays under the NDIS Short Term Accommodation (including respite) funding category.

Why choose us

  • Justify respite frequency and duration in evidence-based language
  • Support carer sustainability and prevent informal-support breakdown
  • Document trial stays leading into SIL or ILO transitions
  • Quantify 1:1, 1:2 or 1:3 support ratios for the participant’s safety profile
  • Written specifically for the NDIA STA funding decision framework

Short Term Accommodation (STA) supports help participants take a break from their usual living arrangement, give informal carers respite, or trial new living settings. The NDIA increasingly requires structured evidence demonstrating both the need for STA and the appropriate length, frequency and support ratio.

What is NDIS Short Term Accommodation?

Short Term Accommodation (STA) is an NDIS support category that funds accommodation, food and 24/7 support for up to 14 days at a time. STA can be used for respite, to trial a new living arrangement before applying for SIL, to support carer wellbeing, or to provide a structured environment during a family crisis. STA is funded under Core — Assistance with Daily Life.

When is an STA Report Required?

An independent STA assessment report is required when the participant is requesting an increase in STA days, applying for STA for the first time, transitioning from family or informal supports to a SIL arrangement, or where the NDIA has requested additional evidence to justify the requested frequency, ratio or environment.

Areas Covered in Our STA Report

  • Participant background, disability profile and current living arrangement
  • Informal support analysis and carer sustainability indicators
  • Behavioural, safety and supervision considerations during STA stays
  • Recommended STA frequency (e.g., 4 nights per quarter)
  • Recommended support ratio (1:1, 1:2, 1:3) and clinical justification
  • Environmental and accessibility requirements for STA providers
  • Goals and outcomes the STA stay is intended to achieve

How STA Connects to Home and Living Pathways

Well-designed STA stays are often the bridge between living with family and moving into SIL, ILO or independent living. Our reports explicitly map STA episodes against the participant’s home and living goal, so that each stay generates evidence that supports the longer-term funding pathway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is STA the same as respite?+

Respite is one use of STA. STA is the broader NDIS funding category that funds accommodation plus 24/7 support — respite for carers is one valid use, but STA can also be used for trial stays, crisis support and skill development.

How long can an STA stay be?+

Up to 14 days per stay, with the total annual amount based on the participant’s assessed need and goals.

Do you provide STA providers?+

No, we are independent assessors only. We do not provide STA accommodation. This independence strengthens the evidentiary value of our reports for the NDIA.
